The first step is to take ownership. These blockages take place when we unknowingly put up barriers or walls for the purpose of self-protection. We close ourselves in to prevent us from being wounded again. Unfortunately, what is meant to keep negative things out, also blocks the flow of our prophetic gift. Even though others may have been the reason that we were shut down to begin with, the ongoing issue is that we are reluctant to expose ourselves to further hurt. Thus, our initial instinct is to hold back.
The primary thing we need to do is recognize our role for the blockage in our spiritual gifts. With God’s help, we have the ability to break free. We can do this by acknowledging our role through repentance of allowing these walls to go up. God is sufficient. He is all the protection we need, and He waits and longs for us to trust in Him. We also use our own efforts to protect ourselves, instead of entrusting our hearts to God.
Second, if we experience being criticized or removed from the ministry or held back in the past, then there may be an aspect of truth in the reasons for why these actions were taken. It’s important to reflect on the reasons why this occurred. We know from experience that this is a tough area to acknowledge, but addressing it and being humble enough to make the necessary adjustments is vital to fulfilling God’s call on our life.
