Satan works against fatherhood.

The antagonism against fatherhood did not just come out of nowhere. Before humankind, there was an archangel named Lucifer who rebelled against God, our Father in heaven.

12 How you are fallen from heaven,
O Day Star, son of Dawn!
How you are cut down to the ground,
you who laid the nations low!
13 You said in your heart,
“I will ascend to heaven;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit on the mount of assembly
on the heights of Zaphon;
14 I will ascend to the tops of the clouds,
I will make myself like the Most High.” (Isaiah 42:12-14)

Lucifer became Satan, and like Satan, he influenced Adam and Eve to rebel against the Father while living a perfect life in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:5). This same spirit of rebellion against authority — even the power of our heavenly Father — has been inherited by all humanity, and the result is sin (Rom. 3:23).

Resisting Authority

Because of this fall in the Garden of Eden, human nature inherently resists authority — whether it is the father of a family or the Father-figure God (Rom. 8:7). More than the mother-child bond, the father-child bond is charged with distance, tension, and even hostility, which is somehow rooted in the father’s power’s paternal authority. The father’s rule seems to be more conflictual than the mother’s because it is more rule-oriented, more emotionally distant, and more aggressive. All of this tension comes from the fact that the child craves and resents authority, as does culture.

Father is the Head of the Home

God mandates the father to be the head of the home (Eph. 5:23), but the father must exercise his leadership role in love and kindness. Fatherhood is never a valid reason for abusive behavior. Violence against wives and children is a crime. Society must bring the perpetrator to justice.

Paternal authority is not about violence. It is about protection, guidance, provision, and a whole lot of significant leadership roles.
