The Higher Risk for Poverty

Women, who grew up without a father, were most likely living in poverty. Due to an increase in lack of education or teenage pregnancy, financial futures are at risk for poverty. One of the main reasons for the increased number of children living at or below the poverty level is the rise of absentee fathers.

If the father leaves the family with limited resources, the female child or children would have little to advance themselves in life. If fatherlessness causes teenage pregnancy and lack of education, it will increase the chances of poverty in adulthood.

It is hard for a single mother to provide financial healthy to her children. Children in father-absent homes are five times more likely to be poor. In 2002, 7.8% of children in married couples were living in poverty, while 38.4% of children in female parent-households. Even in the bible, those who are fatherless are considered lonely. The Lord commanded priests to provide for the widow and the fatherless because of the poverty they find themselves in after losing the father.

Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.”

In the verse above, the widow is also a single mom. The father left the mother, thus taking away any sense of spiritual protection or security that his presence ought to have provided.

In today’s society, single moms and their children are left to fend for themselves. Most kids suffer from poverty because their moms cannot make ends meet. They are also left without parental supervision in most cases. When the father goes, there is a severe consequence, especially for low-income families.
