The Purpose of Desire

Desires and cravings are there because we all have needs, which vary according to levels and degrees. To better understand hunger and cravings, we must first understand the needs of humans.

According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the needs of every individual can be categorized into the following: physiologic, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization needs. Physiologic conditions include air, water, food, shelter, sleep, and clothing. Safety needs include security and safety. Belongingness and love need to have intimate relationships and friendships. Esteem needs come in the form of prestige and a sense of accomplishment. Lastly, the need for self-actualization is all about achieving one’s true potential—becoming the very person God has intended you to become.

Take note that each of these requirements deserves serious consideration. These requirements provide the foundation upon which our wants and requirements in life are built. We require a place to take shelter and feel secure, so purchasing a home is high on our priority list. In addition, people are looking for new jobs because we all have the need to believe that the work that we do counts for something. You feel that driving a brand-new car would be the perfect way to celebrate your recent successes. To put it another way, our hankerings are perfectly reasonable and normal precisely because we all have fundamental requirements that must be met.
