The character and conduct of Abraham in his home was commended by the Lord. On the other hand, Abraham’s nephew Lot, who saw the blessings of God and His promises fulfilled. Sadly, he made a wicked and foolish decision. He chose to lead his family into a city that caused them all to sin (Gen. 13:10-13). He was not able to protect his family’s spiritual health by leading them to be part of a sinful society. Lot led his family into Sodom, but he never led them out again. When God’s judgment fell upon the city, Lot lost his entire family, except for his two daughters (Gen. 19:15-26).

Fathers, it is critical for you to study the Word of the Lord. If you know the way of the Lord, you would not lead your family in the same foolish route as Lot did.

Fathers, it is critical for you to study the Word of the Lord. If you know the way of the Lord, you would not lead your family in the same foolish route as Lot did. You may be leading your family into Sodom — a world with its sinful pleasures and enticements. You who led them into Sodom, may never be able to lead them out of sin again.

Joshua’s Stand

There’s another leader in the Bible who took a stand as to where he would lead his family. At the end of his life, after leading the nation of Israel into the Promised Land, Joshua challenged the nation to choose.

15 Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15, emphasis added)

I believe Joshua was addressing the fathers here. He is addressing the leaders of each family. However, we see how confident Joshua to declare his family’s allegiance to the Lord. He could make his own commitment to serve the Lord. How could he be so sure that his family would serve the Lord? What is the basis of his assurance?

His assurance of his family’s stand is birthed from his willingness and commitment to fulfill his priestly intercession for his family, by confirming his prophetic declaration on their behalf, and upholding his kingly authority over his family.

Joshua had taken his God-given role as priest, prophet, and king in his home. He knew he could count on the faithfulness of God — not necessarily the members of his household — to honor him in that position. His assurance of his family’s stand is birthed from his willingness and commitment to fulfill his priestly intercession for his family, by confirming his prophetic declaration on their behalf, and upholding his kingly authority over his family. The father’s ‘role’ in the context of a family is that of priest is a function of the Church. Without the family, the “father” has little or no meaning, similarly, without the “church”, we cannot really understand the role of the priest.
