Looking at the positive side, listening can also help to build our faith. Scripture tells us that faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God. When we listen to the Word of God, our lives get better. When we listen to God’s word, we begin to become more and more like Jesus Christ. The Word of God has God’s power in it. When we listen, we are encouraged, bold, and courageous to take on the race of destiny. This is why we are expected to give ourselves continually to the word of God.
When we have conversations around the Word of God, we are built up and sharpened. This is why the scripture says iron sharpens iron. Conversation about the Word of God builds faith in a way that nothing else can. So, when you are in a conversation with people, ensure that you are sharing thoughts and words that have the ability to edify.
One scripture in the book of Ephesians buttresses this fact. It says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” (Eph. 4:29, KJV). When we speak wholesome words, then others around us can also be blessed as well.

As a matter of fact, no part of the body is useless.[i] Every part of our body carries out a unique function that no other part of the body can perform. This shows how God is detailed and purposeful in all His dealings and doings. So, when God gave us ears, He expects us to use it to listen –especially to Him.
However, since the fall of man, there are many that have refused to listen. They may have ears physically like we all have, but their hearts are far from God. They have decided to close their hearts from the truth of the Word of God that is able to set them free. The word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any double-edged sword and it is capable of making us great people on earth.
Despite the great promises and blessings that God has promised us, there are many people who have chosen to close their heart to God’s loving invitation. Daily, a lot of people are trooping to hell and hell has not stopped enlarging since the day it was created. This means that men who have ears have refused to hear what God is saying.
Those who listen to God live a fruitful and peaceful life. Those who fail to listen to God have their hearts hardened and will be judged by God. These are the last days and people do not want to listen to sound doctrine. They want to listen to people who will tell them the lies they want to hear. They want preachers who will tell them things that God isn’t pleased with. The truth appears to be something the world now detests a lot. Lies have become the order of the day.
Those who intend to live the life God expects, those who intend to make it to heaven will have to be those who listen to God. Those who listen to the vain doctrines and wisdom of men will end up falling like men. This is why Paul told the Colossian this, “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (Col. 2:8, KJV).
In the book of Revelation, several times the Bible says, “Let him that has ears hear what the Spirit is saying.” There has been so much development in information technology that knowledge has travelled so fast the church has also latched onto these technological advancements to spread the gospel. Several nations have been reached with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. As the message of the gospel is being preached, people are supposed to respond to it and give their lives to Jesus Christ. Whenever the word of God goes out, the Holy Spirit is always there to impress the word on the hearts of those who listen. Those who yield at that time end up becoming sons and daughters of God. However, many people still turn down the Word of God and the free gift of salvation.
