Take care of the vulnerable group.
God also wanted his people to take good care of widows and orphans. They, too, were at a disadvantage. In those days, widows suffered the loss of a lover and the loss of their livelihood. Without someone to support them, widows often struggled to survive. The same was true of orphans, or more literally, children without fathers. There was no one to protect them from injustice except God. So, as we said previously, God himself became a husband to the widow and a father to the orphan. He established laws to protect them and provide for them. And if his people failed to keep these laws, the judges would severely punish them.
Do not neglect the orphans and the widows (which includes the solo parents)
It makes God very angry when widows and orphans are neglected. If the Israelites were guilty of such neglect, they would suffer divine retribution. They would end up as widows and orphans themselves, just like the Egyptians after the Red Sea.
The practical application is obvious. If we claim to follow God, we must show his compassion by caring for strangers, widows, and orphans. The Bible says, “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing” (Deut. 10:18). Then it says this: “And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt” (v. 19).
It is just as essential for us to care for widows and orphans, who have a special place in God’s heart and thus a special claim on our love. Church leaders should know the widows in their congregations, and they should be quick to provide whatever friendship and practical help are needed. Whether married or single, men and women should go out of their way to start companies with boys and girls who don’t have a father or mother at home. This is the way we should live because this is the kind of God we serve: “a father to the fatherless, a defender of widows” (Ps. 68:5).
