Go back to Philippians 4:17-18. If people are doubting that bringing back the tithes and offering was practiced in the early church, then this passage shows Paul’s acknowledgement of the church’s giving. They gave to their spiritual father.
Paul also tells them, “I have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied” (Phil. 4:18). He tells the people that what the Philippian church did was not just a tithe, but it was a târumah. It went directly to the minister. The generosity of the people actually created an abundance in the provision for the minister. Surely, this generosity is prompted by the Holy Spirit and provided for by the Father. Who can give when they have not been given any increase to tithe and to offer from?
Paul said, “Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account” (Phil. 4:17). This verse tells us that the giver benefits more from the târumah, more than the minister who receives it. Even today, people need to realize that the givers’ profit accumulates in the generosity they show to their pastors. The people experience increase when they offer their târumah to the priest. Paul is more concerned about allowing the people to experience this blessing more than his own benefit, because He is secure that the Lord shall provide all his need.
