Despite the favor of God over Isaac’s life, they still experienced dysfunction in the family because they, like us, live in a sinful world. As a common human family, we saw that there was favoritism and conflict in the family. When people take matters into their own hands, conflict start to arise. It started when Sarai convinced Abram to consummate with the slave Hagar (Gen. 16:2). When Isaac is a young child, Sarah asks Abraham to send away Isaac’s half-brother Ishmael, along with his slave mother Hagar. With reluctance, and a promise from God that Ishmael will thrive, he agrees. Nevertheless, we see family conflict boiling right there. Even if it was Sarai’s manipulation that caused this, it was Abram’s final say that could have prevented this drama. The consequences of Sarai’s actions were passed on to Isaac’s generation when Isaac and Rebekah had their own favorite child. Moreover, Jacob’s favoritism toward Joseph and Benjamin caused severe conflict among his sons. The consequences of favoritism have been passed on from one generation to the next. Even today, we inherit relational patterns from our families of origin. It is up to us to decide which elements of these patterns we would allow to be passed onto the next generation, and which cycles of transmissions must be broken.
