Warnings for destructive parenting
The Bible is not shy about warning about the negative consequences of bad parenting, especially for fathers. Failure to fulfill their God-given responsibilities at home. In Deuteronomy 28, a long list of curses would befall those who disobeyed His Law. One curse is, “You shall have sons and daughters, but they shall not remain yours, for they shall go into captivity” (Dt. 28:41). God creates children for us to enjoy. God intended for children to be a constant source of delight for us as parents. However, how many parents today want their parents?
Whether they feel like they are a burden or a blessing, children are sure to pick up on the attitude that their parents have toward them. They would respond in kind as appropriate. What would happen if we failed to discipline our children and relate to them in a way that showed that we enjoyed spending time with them? What other options do we have?
The bondage of lousy parenting for the children
According to Deuteronomy 28:41, they were going to be taken into captivity, and this is something that is still happening to us today. We see many people locked up on the spiritual and emotional levels because their fathers treated them like a burden and made them feel that way.
Children have become adults and “gone into captivity”—to drugs, illicit sex, the occult, and many other of Satan’s traps. Children in the United States of America are held captive in the same manner and to the same extent as if they had been kidnapped and sold into slavery by a foreign power.
The onus of responsibility rests squarely on the shoulders of the fathers who have neglected to cultivate meaningful relationships with their offspring and inculcate in them a respect for the law of God.
