The fact that the widow was gathering sticks is evident that the woman was poor and forsaken. In order to test if she was the person God said would provide for him, he begs for water. She readily complied. He went further, and asked for bread, and observes her reply. She spoke of her son, as she was a widow. She also swore by the God of Israel. Elijah was now sure she was the woman the Lord revealed to him while he was at the brook.53

Truly, God would use the oddest sources of provision. He used the ravens to feed Elijah at the brook (1 Kings. 17:2-6). Ravens by nature are selfish creatures. They’ll never share nor can they be trained to bring someone else food. God transitioned Elijah from being provided for by the ravens, to getting sustenance from a poor widow who was dirt poor, about to make the final meal for her and her so, and just wait to die from starvation. Here was a woman who knew she was at the end of the line, and has accepted her fate. However, here God was redeeming the situation for her and using her to provide for His prophet. God can use the most impossible circumstance to provide for His ministers; the only question is if you would allow God to use you.
