The father chooses the way his family will go. He chooses if his marriage ends up in divorce, and his children left without a healthy picture of what a marriage looks like. He chooses if the children would grow up undisciplined or unaware about the salvation that they have in Jesus. The father is given honor as the head of the family because much is expected of him.

Fatherhood is the office that God has blessed with tremendous privileges of leadership because of the burden the father must carry.

Fatherhood is the office that God has blessed with tremendous privileges of leadership because of the burden the father must carry. This theme runs throughout the Bible — from beginning to the end. In the days of evil, immediately before the flood, there was one man who found grace in the sight of God, and it was Noah. It was because of Noah’s faith that his entire household is saved. God said to Noah: “Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you alone are righteous before me in this generation” (Gen. 1:7 NRSV). The righteousness of Noah brought about a covering for his entire family. It was because Noah took his place before God as head of his household that he had the privilege to bring his entire family with him into the ark.

Leadership in the Home

After the flood, God began to look for a man who would become the head of a special nation, destined to be a blessing to humanity. Eventually, God found the man He was looking, and this was Abraham. Genesis 18:9 tells us the special element in Abraham’s character that caused God to choose him specifically over all the other men in his generation.

19 No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him. (Genesis 18:9)

The amazing truth is God saw Abraham’s capacity for fatherhood even before he had Isaac. God already saw the kind of father he would be even before He blessed him with a child.

God chose Abraham because he knew he could count on him to train and discipline his children and his household in the way of the Lord. What tremendous weight God places on this aspect of a man’s character. The amazing truth is God saw Abraham’s capacity for fatherhood even before he had Isaac. God already saw the kind of father he would be even before He blessed him with a child.

All you need to do is to accept the grace God has for you to be the leader he called you to be for your family.

If you are father, and you are doubting your capabilities to be a leader in your house, look at your family. You have a wife and you have children because God knows you have the ability to be a good leader for your family. Even before you became a father, God already intended you to be one. All you need to do is to accept the grace God has for you to be the leader he called you to be for your family.

The expectation was for Abraham to command his children and his household. The word “command” can offend people in the Western society. However, it is a key word in this verse. There are times when a man has both the right and duty to command. He stands as God’s representative and governor in the home. Thus, he cannot be weak and compromising. He must be able to say firmly to his wife and children, “I require you to do so-and-so.”

Some men may say, “What will my wife and children say? They aren’t used to me speaking like that?” It might shock them, but eventually, they would feel the security and safety of having a man in the house. Both the wife and the children know in their hearts who ought to lead — it is how they are designed to operate — and they would respond to the leadership of the man. Women may have taken the lead in the home by default because their husband failed to do it, but they would happy to give it up if the man would take over and take his rightful place.
